Surfing in Mimizan

Mimizan Plage boasts almost 10 km of beaches on either side of an arm of water known as the “Courant de Mimizan”. This current is the natural outlet for a freshwater lake, Lac d’Aureilhan.

The Mimizan beaches of La Garluche, Remember and Côté Sud, and even the more remote Lespecier, offer numerous surfing spots within easy reach. Located in supervised areas, these spots are ideal for safe surfing. More experienced surfers, on the other hand, can walk along the beach away from the crowded areas, in search of the ” secret spot ” that is every surfer’s dream.

All these beaches offer waves breaking over fast, hollow sandy bottoms. The quality of these beach breaks has made the Aquitaine coast famous in the surfing world.

In summer, weather conditions are often anticyclonic, with sunny days ahead. Morning sessions, when easterly winds dig into the waves, are ideal for getting the tube. At the end of the day, when the coastal breezes fade, ” sunset sessions ” offer the most patient unforgettable moments of communion with nature.

Catch the wave

To help as many people as possible discover the pleasures of surfing, the Mimizanne Surf Schools offer courses adapted to the level and age of students.

These courses, accessible from the age of 7, are supervised by qualified instructors, many of whom speak several foreign languages (English, Spanish, German). These schools offer discovery or advanced activities in complete safety.

In addition to teaching the technical aspects of these disciplines, the schools also provide their students with a precise understanding of the marine environment. This learning is essential for gaining autonomy in the waves, with or without a board, and ensuring your own safety and that of other riders: possible dangers linked to currents, tides…

It is also essential to protect and respect a particularly fragile natural environment through simple individual behavior: take the marked paths to the beach, dispose of garbage in the garbage cans available to the public on the beaches…

Over the past few years, surf camps and lodges have been springing up to welcome surfing enthusiasts on all-inclusive holidays (accommodation, surf lessons, other activities, meals).

Surfing is also accessible to people with motor disabilities, with special equipment and assistance.

Seated surfing is particularly suited to lower-limb handicaps and paraplegics.

It is practiced on a waveski(kayaksurf) propelled by a paddle, offered in Mimizan by All Water.

Some schools also offerhandisurfing courses.

Within everyone's reach

Surfing for adults and children alike!

In response to the public’s growing interest in surfing activities, the Mimizan Intercommunal Tourist Office is adding to its family-friendly offer by offering surfing discovery sessions for younger visitors.

These sessions are organized in partnership with a number of Mimizan plage surf schools.

This operation has resulted in the Mimiz’Ô label. It’s been such a success that many parents register their children before they arrive.
