Mimizan tide guide: Surf to the rhythm of the ocean!

Thought only the moon was romantic? At Mimizan-Plage, it also makes the ocean dance! Our Landes surf spot vibrates to the rhythm of the tides, a truly natural spectacle orchestrated by the moon and the sun.

How does it work? It’s simple: twice a day, the Atlantic offers us its aquatic show! The water level rises and falls like a gigantic sea breath. The tidal coefficients at Mimizan are our stars of the moment:

Between 30 and 60: the ocean takes its siesta, quietly and peacefully.
Above 70: it’s a wave fiesta, the ocean goes wild!

Local tip: These water movements totally transform our Mimizan beaches and influence your water sports activities. Perfect for planning your surfing session, fishing trip or swim in complete safety!

The dune

Our 10 kilometers of coastline are a true natural treasure. The dunes, covered with typical vegetation such as gourbets and oyats, protect Mimizan from winter storms. Every year, we take care of these delicate environments by mulching the dune cordon and preserving rare plant species.

To combat wind erosion, the communauté de communes has installed coconut fibre nets to trap sand and prevent it from ending up in the streets of Mimizan Plage. This natural and sustainable technique helps us to preserve our coastline.

It’s important not to walk on the dune to preserve this fragile ecosystem.

Good to know:Driftwood is sometimes moved to the foot of the dune to maintain an ecosystem favourable to micro-fauna. It is also used to stabilize the dunes and reinforce their protection against the elements. So don’t pick it up

Le Courant de Mimizan

The Mimizan current, spillway of the three Landes lakes, forms a natural boundary between the northern and southern sectors of the seaside resort. Its eventful history, marked by the whims of the sea, makes it a fascinating place for game-fishing enthusiasts.

Today, two man-made dykes channel the current, which meanders for over 7 km. But marine erosion does not always spare these infrastructures, requiring constant surveillance.

Come and discover this unique natural site, with its meanders, rich history and water sports activities.

Wave formation

Waves are an inseparable part of the ocean, shaping a different horizon every day. Depending on lows, winds, swells and tides, waves can be more or less powerful. The sand wave, also known as beach break, is the queen of the Mimizanais coastline. It’s capricious, which is what gives it its aura. Its shape and strength change with the tides and sandbanks.
